The King County sheriff’s office says four kids used a pit bull to attack two women in SeaTac, according to The Seattle Times.

The first woman saw the kids kicking the dog Sunday evening and stopped her car because she thought they needed help. The sheriff’s office says a 15-year-old girl punched the woman with her fists while a boy brought the dog. The 63-year-old woman was bitten on a hand and thigh.

As the group ran off they were followed by another woman. She was attacked by the 15-year-old girl and the dog. The 41-year-old Seattle woman suffered serious bite wounds to her arms, head and face.

Deputies arrived and arrested the 15-year-old girl and three boys - 11, 12 and 13 years old. The dog was turned over to Animal Control.

Apparently, a dog lover has decided to document Michael Vick’s killer dogs on a blog and in the process, put a child’s life in danger.

Not sure what the purpose is, except an attempt at making these animals look cute and helpless, but it just look irresponsible.

Social networking sites for dogs? Kitty wigs? It’s time to stop the madness.

As we are all well aware, America is currently cleaning house. We’ve thrown off the cynicism and done away with the irony. As President Obama said in his inauguration speech, “the time has come to set aside childish things.” And so I beseech you, pet owners of all species and breeds, to move into the new era with us. Yes, we can stop treating animals like people and start treating animals like pets.

I’m not saying you can’t get your dog some utilitarian booties to protect her tender paws from the elements. Nor am I asking you to stop celebrating your cat’s birthday (which provides endless opportunities for everyone’s favorite pastime, “kitty-in-a-bag”). But there are some pet trends that are just plain wrong.

All week we’ve been reveling in our pet love.  We’ve celebrated our affection to the umpteenth degree.  In an effort to maintain some level of balanced reportage, we offer the following list.

Pet Trends That Must Die

Man’s best friends are no such thing. They are brutal, dirty and a primitive throwback to the days of bearbaiting, claims Giles Coren in the British “Times Online”.

As a way to get special privileges for their pets, some people fake disability and claim their special kitty, iquana or parrot is a service animal.

Rebecca Skloot has the story in the New York Times in Creature Comforts.

A Palm Coast couple was arrested Tuesday after a CD showing pictures of a 40-year-old woman having sex with dogs that she adopted from the humane society was turned over to authorities, deputies said, in an article on the Tampa Bay 10 website.

David Maldonado, 42, and his wife, Carla Maldonado, 40, were arrested on charges of lewd and lascivious battery and contributing to the delinquency of a minor in connection with an incident that occurred four years ago.

Flagler County sheriff’s investigators said the Flagler County Humane Society, where Carla Maldonado had worked, turned over the compact disc in November. The humane society terminated her employment upon receipt of the CD.

A 7-year-old Fort Lupton boy is recovering from injuries he received over the weekend when he was attacked by a dog.

Jesse Shaffer was playing football on Saturday afternoon with neighborhood children in a backyard in the 900 block of Stage Drive when he was severely bitten in the face by a 3-year-old chow mix, said Fort Lupton Police Chief Ron Grannis.

Shaffer was flown by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Aurora, where he underwent emergency surgery on his face and head.

The dog, named Oso, is being held for observation by a by a local veterinarian, Grannis said.

The owners of the dog, who were not identified, were cited for not having a dog license, not having rabies shots for Oso and for having an animal that created a danger, Grannis said.

The dog’s owners are being cooperative in the investigation, Grannis said.

“They are very concerned about the little boy,” he said.

The children had been playing in the yard, with the dog there, for hours, Grannis said. The football went behind a shed at about 5:30 p.m., and when Jesse went to get it, the attack occurred out of eyesight of witnesses.

“We don’t know what spurred the dog to suddenly bite,” Grannis said.

Jesse was back home Sunday, and he visited with Grannis on Monday, the chief said.

The Shaffer family could not be reached for comment.

Here’s a great article in the Seattle Stranger about a group of citizens who’re trying to get a pit bull ban before the city council who’ve received death threats!

The comments indicate the pit bull lovers care more about their stupid dogs than they do about the human victims.

Another senseless death by pit bull attack:

The owners of the two dogs that attacked a 90-year-old Staten Island man, an event that ultimately led to his death, have had the charges against them upgraded to second-degree manslaughter, Richmond County District Attorney Daniel M. Donovan announced this morning.

James McNair and Kim DiPrima of Newark Avenue in Elm Park could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted at trial. The pair had initially faced second-degree assault charges, but following Piotrowski’s death, Donovan’s office sought to have the charges against the two upgraded.

“Following [Henry Piotrowski's] tragic death, my office asked a Grand Jury to consider a new charge of manslaughter in the second degree in this case,” Donovan said. “This charge alleges that the defendants, through their reckless behavior caused the death of [Piotrowski].”

The two dogs attacked Piotrowski, a World War II veteran, in the yard of his Port Richmond home on July 1. After several surgeries, which included the amputation of one of his legs and an arm, Piotrowski died on Aug. 17. The Medical Examiner’s office confirmed that Piotroswki died of “multiple complications from animal bites.”

The Moses Lake City Council took no action Wednesday on a proposed ordinance to ban pit bulls in the city.

The council decided to form a committee of dog owners and other residents to find a compromise.

The Columbia Basin Herald reports that a pit bull that mauled a 6-year-old boy Sept. 12 will be killed. Police cited the owner for keeping a vicious dog, having a dog at large and not having a pet license.
